The Confluences – Now a Nonprofit! – Donations accepted and appreciated!!

Damn it’s crazy being a grown up. And it felt like it was about time for A Confluences to pull itself together, lawyer up, and take the next step. No, our cleanup isn’t getting married, having a baby and moving to the suburbs, but it is now a fully fledged nonprofit with the State of Colorado!

What does this mean? Quite a few things I’m learning. First, it wouldn’t be possible without the patient guidance of Cory Halliburton. One of my longest running friends, determined fisherman, and decorated lawyer at Freeman Law helped pull this all together and I’m thankful beyond words.

The IRS says a “Nonprofit must not be organized or operated for the benefit of private interests“. This is perfect since our will strictly be for the benefit of Clear Creek, Denver, Colorado, and Planet Earth. Nothing private about any of those entities.

There are currently 1.6 million nonprofits in the United States and 20,000 in Colorado alone, but we aren’t paying anyone’s salary or funneling money to avoid taxes. Nope, this is pure and simple a way to bring awareness to one thing we all have in common. Clean water and a healthy planet. Yes, it’s an uphill battle against apathy, awareness, and a-holes, but it’s a battle worth fighting.

Every year at our cleanup we collect a ton of giveaways from companies who would prefer to have their donations be Tax Exempt. Now we have that benefit for those generous folks. Becoming more visible to the community is another benefit, and with this, we are really hoping to gain more and more volunteers every year. A cleanup of this size wouldn’t be possible without boots on the ground.

There is no plan on how big or small our non-profit becomes, or who we attract, just as long as we keep it going and continue to do our damnedest for the things we care about.

Looking forward to the future and I hope you all are too! Donations accepted above, if you didn’t notice.
